Static vs. dynamic QR codes: which should you use?

Understand editable destinations, scan analytics, print testing, and the free and paid options.

What a static QR does

A static QR encodes a fixed destination or payload. Our static generator can make unlimited static codes without a subscription. Once distributed, the code itself cannot be edited; if you control the destination webpage you can still update the content of that page.

Use static codes when the destination is stable and you do not need managed scan reporting.

What a dynamic QR does

A dynamic QR encodes a managed URL which redirects to the destination you choose. You can change that destination in your account without replacing the printed QR. Managed redirects also make scan analytics possible.

Dynamic codes rely on an active service and the account’s allowance. Our free plan includes one active dynamic code; Pro includes 30 total. Purchased Displays are managed separately from that allowance.

Choose based on the job

For frequently changing promotions, menus, or appointment links, a dynamic code gives you flexibility. For a permanent webpage where you need only a simple link, a static code may be enough.

Neither type guarantees a successful scan under all conditions. Leave a clear margin, use readable contrast, and test the final printed size on real phones.

Know what happens if you cancel

Static downloads keep their encoded destination. After Pro ends, the oldest active dynamic code remains available under the free allowance and additional dynamic codes are preserved but paused. Purchased physical Displays do not need Pro for link management.

Before changing plans, review your active codes and decide which one should remain in use. Deactivate codes you no longer need rather than deleting their designs.
